The crisis of our age is not just about depleted resources and the buildup of pollutants in the biosphere. It’s also a matter of depleted imaginations and the buildup of dysfunctional ideas in the collective consciousness of our time.
The tipping point on Planet Earth may well come, not when the heat waves become unbearable and our ecosystems collapse, but when the noise in our own heads becomes unbearable and our psychosystems collapse – when mood disorders, distraction and psychosis reach a point where we cannot think clearly anymore. Then we will descend, not into apocalyptic anarchy, like so many have suggested, but ambivalence. We will no longer care.
